# Learning Progress 学习进程

This is a log of my Nederlands learning progress in CVO Gent.

## Week 1: Sept 11

The language class focusing on Dutch vocabulary related to family relations and verbs.

Specifically, the teacher was:

* Reviewing family terms like *nicht*, *neef*, *grootmoeder*, etc. and explaining how they differ from English terms. Students had a reading activity identifying these terms.
* Discussing Dutch verbs, starting with the *present tense (presens)* but noting the class level is working on the perfect tense (perfectum).
* Reviewing regular verb conjugations in the present tense using examples like *kijken*. Categorizing verbs into groups based on conjugation patterns.
* Encouraging students to ask questions about any unfamiliar words. Clarifying terms as needed, like *verpleegster* vs *verpleger*.
* Checking students' understanding throughout by having them repeat or explain terms. Moving between the textbook, whiteboard and conversation.

The overall aim seemed to be reinforcing Dutch family vocabulary and verb conjugations through readings, examples and discussion to enhance the students' language skills.

## Week 2

## Week 3

In week 3, the lecturer taught the conversation skills in a grocery store or in a butcher's shop. It included: how to greet, how to ask for the price, how to tell the staffs what you want, and pay for them. Also, you may need to ask for change or it is "gepast" (gepassen).

## Week 4

* Make appointment to someone
* Ask for the propoerties of a furniture (meubel). For example, the size (dimension, afmetingen), the color (kleur), the material (het materiaal), etc.

## Week 5, 20231016: Modale Verba (Modal Verb)

In this week, the teacher taught mainly the *Modale Verba*, or Modal Verbs in English. In English, typical modal verbs includes: kunnen, willen, moeten, magen, zullen, and zouden. All words except zouden are introduced.

The critical point is that, even though willen/moeten/magen look similar to their "friends" in English, their meanings are quite different. For example: "ik wil kooken" means "I want to cook" or "I would like to cook", rather than "I am going to cook in a expected time."

Overview:

* Modale Verba
* Adjectief met of zonder -e

* How to return or exchange your clothes in case you don't like it, or it is not gepast.
* How to ask for the price of the clothes.
